Hooray for Simon Watts!

Minister of Local Government Simon Watts has obviously been watching DCC climate alarmism used to railroad a shortlist of 3 similar South Dunedin Futures – all requiring the destruction of 1,100+ homes, Billion$+ cost to make room for wetlands and canals rather than a simple pipes and pumps solution to flooding.

Fortunately the ORC partners insisted on including a pipes and pumps option for consultation which DCC Mayor Barker was ‘very unhappy’ about.

I’ve written to mayors and Councillors across New Zealand outlining my concerns about the use of extreme climate forecasting scenarios that can drive unnecessary costs onto ratepayers.

Kiwis expect councils to make practical, evidence-based decisions that are proportionate to the risks they face, not default to worst-case assumptions that can unnecessarily increase rates and delay investment.

That’s why I’ve directed officials to take stock of how these scenarios are being used and provide advice on whether stronger national direction or legislative change is needed to restore consistency and common sense.

National is committed to protecting our communities from natural hazards while ensuring every rates dollar is spent wisely. We’ll keep fixing the basics, building the future, and backing decisions that deliver real value for ratepayers.
