$20+ million here and $20+ million for more cycle-lanes there pushed by a majority of Councillors in the face of Billion $ DCC budgeted debt, an unbalanced budget and even more borrowing…

Dunedin Mayor Jules Radich and Cr Lee Vandervis sought to stop further cycle-ways spending.

However, their motion to have all further planned Dunedin City Council cycleways funding reviewed — because of ‘‘very low and declining use’’ of cycle lanes — failed.

This despite DCC’s own cycleway counter evidence of low and falling cycleway use.

Just re-read and rubbed my eyes. $20 mils for Albany St cycleway, what?! Seriously, this is the last place in city that needs a cycleway. It’s flat, short and well connected already, and if cars move too fast then lower the speed limit during business hours – problem solved!

Seriously DCC, just stop approving expensive shite cycleways where nobody wants them, and then stop complaining that nobody uses them. Instead listen to actual cyclists and build basic version without bells & whistles where it actually will make a difference for commute and recreational usage (the Dunedin Tunnels Trail project)
